Showtime's Steven Espinoza and Mike Tyson, of Iron Mike Promotions, had a tele-confence call about the upcoming Pittsburgh Power boxing card. The fights will be aired live on Showtime on Friday April 18. Sammy Vasquez will open the televised card against fellow unbeaten Juan Rodriguez Jr.
Vasquez, who has done two tours of duty in Iraq, will be making his televised debut against Rodriguez (11-0 5 KO). Vasquez is coming off of a TKO-4 against Berlin Abreu, unbeaten coming into the fight, that saw Vasquez get off of the canvas to secure the knockout. That fight caught the eye of Mike Tyson and Iron Mike Promotions.
This Showtime card would not be in Pittsburgh without Vasquez. It is the first time that television has come to Pittsburgh since Monty Meza Clay knocked out former featherweight champion Eric Aiken in early 2008. Vasquez is hoping that an impressive showing will help him step up the ladder.
After former Olympian Felix Diaz fights the night will end with Bunola native Rod Salka fighting on Showtime for the second time, the first time in a main event. The last fight saw him lose a very disputed decision to Ricardo Alvarez, older brother to Saul Alvarez. Salka is up against the wall and will be looking to win to keep his career relevant.
Both fighters are looking to take a step forward and winning on April 18 is the first step.
