Vanes Martirosyan is coming off a WBC semifinal title eliminator win over Saul Roman via TKO-7, and his trainer Freddie Roach thinks not only can he beat Saul Alvarez, but he can knock him out in one:
“Everybody is talking about how great he (Alvarez) is. I think Vanes would knock him out in one round
Martirosyan (30-0 19 KO) also won the WBC silver "title" and is in line to face Alvarez. I don't know if Roach really believes this, or if he is trying to stir up interest with a little trash talk.
20-year-old Alvarez (36-0-1 26 KO) has a very dangerous fight with Ryan Rhodes (45-4 31 KO) which will be his toughest test to date.
Martirosyan is far from a top fighter at 154 but he is in his prime and would be the best name, outside of Rhodes if he wins, on the record of Alvarez.
I would favor Alvarez in this one as Martirosyan just got past Roman this Saturday. He was cut badly and won via comeback TKO-7. I think Alvarez could get him out of there but it is interesting to see what happens here, as it appears Alvarez has a Manny Pacquiao fight on the table.
