Kevin Iole says that Bob Arum is trying to put together a fight for Kelly Pavlik in August around the Youngstown area. The fight would air on ShoBox and would be a final tuneup before a big fight in 2012.
It was reported earlier in the day that Interbox/Lucian Bute, Sauerland/Mikkel Kessler, and Frank Warren/James DeGale contacted Pavlik for a fight. It appears that none of those fights will be happening soon.
It would appear that Pavlik will take a fight against a faded veteran or club fighter before taking the leap. The team that handles Pavlik is often criticized, and rightfully so, but this is a very good move. Pushing him into a fight to soon would ruin what career he has left.
He needs to work his way up to a big fight and if that takes awhile then so be it. If nothing else this gives local fans one more chance to see the local boy made good. He may never return to his form but he was the legitimate middleweight champion and a damn good fighter.
This would be a return to ShoBox for Pavlik and I must admit that it is pretty bizzare to be talking about a former middleweight champion fighting on ShoBox.
