I was going to do a morning after article but this deserves to be commented on right now. Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire smashed Fernando Montiel in a flash. This was the first loss for Montiel since 2006 and the first knockout loss of his career. Donaire won the WBC and WBO bantamweight titles with the smashing knockout. This also makes Donaire a title winner in three separate weight classes. I was one of the people that said Donaire (26-1 18 KO) didn’t deserve his pound-for-pound ranking and he proved me wrong tonight. He netted the win with a massive left hook and it may only be February but this knockout is going to be the knockout of the year. It resembles the Sergio Martinez-Paul Williams knockout as it was unexpected, sudden, and between two very good fighters. Montiel (44-3-2 34 KO)showed a huge heart by getting up after he was rolling around on the ground and kicking his legs. This obviously puts Donaire at the top of the bantamweight division and could set up a fight with the winner of the Showtime tournament. He said after the fight that he wants to unify the division and if anyone can it is him. Jospeh Agbeko is set to fight Abner Mares in a fight that will crown an IBF titleholder. This is a money fight and should be able to be made. Other than that there isn’t much out there and I doubt Anselmo Moreno will put his WBA title on the line against Donaire. If he does move up a fight with Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. (20-0-1 17 KO) would be a barnburner. The options are endless for Donaire and he is sitting on the top of the boxing world right now. He is the best little man out there and is the heir apparent to Manny Pacquiao. He is Filipino, exciting, and beating everyone put in front of him just like Pacquiao. If Pacquiao quits anytime soon there is a more than suitable replacement in Donaire. More to come tomorrow.
